Wacker Drive replaced the city’s produce market in 1926. An extension along the east bank of the South Branch opened in conjunction with the Eisenhower Expressway in the late 1950s. Similar drives along the facing riverbanks were never attempted, though space was left in front of Union Station and the Merchandise Mart.
